I am so mad I could spit. Apparently, the owner's wife came into work today and asked my daughter who she voted for. She told her Obama and this is the text message my daughter sent me today:
"The owner's wife asked me who i voted 4. Told her and she was furious and called me a socialist idiot and stormed off."
I was so angry I could have spit. I went to our human resource manager and she said there is no law against calling employees an idiot. And as long as she doesn't fire her or treat her differently because of who she voted for, Heather has no recourse.

Well doesn't that just suck!? How dare she attack my child for doing something good like voting! What right does an employer have to chastise an employee for excersing their right to vote? The Daddy in me kicked in big time and I wanted to go to her work and scream at that lady or break her arm or flush her head in a toilet. I didn't but boy did I want to. Fortunately, Heather kept quiet and just went about her work. But she texted me about 12 times during the day so I know she was upset. Her last text said that the woman was sure going to feel like an a$$hole when Obama wins tonight!
She works at Merryfield's Bar & Restaurant right here in Oaklyn, NJ. They have great bar food at reasonable prices. Even their drinks are reasonably priced and the local yocals crowd the place most nights. BUT, I may just go down there later, order a dozen wings (their wings are THE BEST in the county), and jump up and down screaming for Obama just to see it that woman will say antyhing to ME. Or maybe not, cause it is Heather's work and I have to respect her work space. But it's a good fantasy. And Heather is SO RIGHT. She sure is going to feel like an a$$hole when her candidate loses. I love my daughter and I am so lucky she is a strong and independent woman. She does me proud. And I'm glad she stood strong behind her vote for Barack Obama as President.

There's a reason I don't talk about politics at work. Most people are idiots.
Sorry about this.
Matt - Thanks. I told her that. Now she knows not to talk politics. Still, this woman should know better...
So it's still tough wanting to jump in and protect your child at that age too? Dammit...your a good daddy.
Got somethin for ya...
Tattooed Minivan Mom - Yup, I think the parenting thing never goes away. But that's not a bad thing. So... what have you got for me?
I agree with matthewdryden. The workplace is definitely not the place to discuss politics but then again, you really don't want to discuss them with friends at the dinner table, either. A double-edged sword indeed.
On that front, I have a co-worker (and Facebook friend) that I seem to have noticed hasn't quite been talking to me the same way since I joined the "No on Prop 8" Facebook group. Maybe something else is bothering them but I the timing is definitely uncanny.
As for your daughter's situation, if she wants to stay there then she just needs to stay cool. You don't want to mess with the owner's wife of any business because regardless of the circumstances, she'll always be right.
Her boss is so out of order. Im just like you, Im the type of person who would storm in there (in my kitten heels of course) and stick her head in a bucket of ice!!! If I lived close by Id go in there and be the most awkward customer ever and wouldnt leave until Id made her boss cry! This kitten is a tiger lol X
I bet that woman feels like an asshole now. I don't understand why people can't respect other people's decision to vote for a particular candidate.
I thought who we vote for is a secret and we have the right not to tell anyone our choice?
Anyway, congrats to Obama!! Yay!
Politics and religion are two things never to talk about with friends, co-workers or family. If your daughter had thought quick enough, she should have said, that's why we have our voting the way we do. It is our personal right to vote for whom ever we wish. But by her not saying anything, just shows that your daughter is a lot more mature then the owners wife. Most of our family also voted for Obama, but one daughter that didn't left me a comment on my last post, letting me know she thinks we were all wrong. I will not answer her, I don't see any reason to keep nonsense going back and forth. I just hope Obama will be able to pull things off and get this old country back into shape. But I'm afraid old George and his cronies have about done us in. And McCain being one of them would have been the wrong person to elect. Tell your daughter, in life we have to learn to bite our tongues a lot of the time to keep peace with our friends, co-workers and family.
Dave - Yea the workplace is no place for politics and Heather learned that the hard way.
Vintage Kitten - Grrr girl. I wish you did live closer.
Tamicks - I'm sure she does. It was a very emotional election for a lot of people unfortunately.
Foongpc - It is a secret as long as you don't tell anyone. But she wasn't expecting that kind of reaction. And yes, Congrats to Obama!
Old Lady Lincoln - You are so right. But this is the first election Heather has ever voted in and she was proud to be a part of it and wanted to share it. Anyway, I believe George and his cronies have done so much serious damage that Obama will have enough trouble just trying to dig us out of this hole for the first few years. I don't expect any miracle change happening overnight. But in the long haul, I'm hoping for things to improve.
Wow! I'm so sorry your daughter had to experience that. It's totally b.s.! But she sounds like she has a good head on her shoulders and made her Dad very proud!
Porcelain - It sure is b.s. Just gotta chalk it up to a learning experience and move on. Anyway, he won so she has the last laugh!
I was amazed by the number of people all over the country just waiting for the results last night especially those in Chicago and NYC. I've never seen anything quite like it, have you?
Btw, your daughter handled the situation real well. :o)
Babette - It sure was amazing and thrilling to see so many people celebrating. And yes, I'm very happy with the way my daughter handled the situation.
That's inexcusable. Luckily, no one asked me who I voted for at work. They shouldn't. It's no one's business but my own. My sister said someone asked her that question and she responded "There's a curtain on the voting booth for a reason."
Kathy - It sure is inexcusable. And your sister had the right response, but this was Heather's first vote and she didn't expect that type of reaction. She knows better now.
I don't agree with mistreating folks. It was probably done in a moment of anger. If it continues, though, that is a different matter.
But let me tell you about my mom's situation. She lives in another state and owns a small business that employs 12 people.
Now that Obama is president, and plans to not only to raise taxes on businesses like hers, he also plans to raise the minimum wage, which in effect, is another tax increase on businesses.
She told me over the phone that most likely, she is going to have to lay off two of the people that work for her, and she does not want to do so.
Go Obama!
Go Democratic Congress!
Paul - Of course it was done in a moment of anger. As a businesswoman she should know better than to ask her employees who they voted for and then chastise them for their choice. I bet if it was reversed and she was chastised for voting for McCain, your reaction would be a lot stronger!
I'm sorry your mom may have to lay off some employees but don't blame that on Obama, blame it on the effect that 8 years of Bush has had on the economy. And 4 years of McCain would have been like 12 years of Bush. Thank goodness that didn't happen.
That is awful, does not sound like she is a very professional businesswoman to me at all. It takes all kinds now a days I guess. I am so sorry this happened to your daughter.
Jodi - It sure was unprofessional. My daughter and I appreciate your and everyone's support. :)
